Yishtabach ends the Pesukei D'zimrah section of the service. The overall theme being the number 15;  15 expressions of praise in the first half of the prayer and 15 words thereafter, being the number of Psalms of  Song of Ascents (Psalms 120-134 composed by David) 15 is also the numerical value of  G-d's name - tradition says that by His name He created heaven and earth; and that all creation belongs to Him, including our praise.  -Art Scroll

Chatzi or Half Kaddish

Kaddish (קדישQaddish Aramaic: "holy"; alternate spellings, qaddishḳaddish) is a prayer found in the Jewish prayer service. The central theme of the Kaddish is the magnification and sanctification of God's name.
The opening words of this prayer are inspired by Ezekiel 38:23, a vision of God becoming great in the eyes of all the nations. The central line of the Kaddish in Jewish tradition is the congregation's response: יְהֵא שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא מְבָרַךְ לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא (Yehei shmëh rabba mevarakh lealam ulalmey almaya, "May His great name be blessed for ever, and to all eternity"), a public declaration of God's greatness and eternality.
The oldest version of the Kaddish is found in the Siddur of Rab Amram Gaon, c. 900

The various versions of the Kaddish are:
  • Hatzi Kaddish (חצי קדיש) or Kaddish Le'ela (קדיש לעלא) – Literally "Half Kaddish", sometimes called the "Readers Kaddish"
  • Kaddish Yatom (קדיש יתום) or Kaddish Yehe Shelama Rabba (קדיש יהא שלמא רבא) – Literally "Orphan's Kaddish", although commonly referred to as Kaddish Avelim (קדיש אבלים), the "Mourners' Kaddish"
  • Kaddish Shalem (קדיש שלם) or Kaddish Titkabbal (קדיש תתקבל) – Literally "Complete Kaddish" or "Whole Kaddish"
  • Kaddish d'Rabbanan (קדיש דרבנן) or Kaddish al Yisrael (קדיש על ישראל) – Literally "Kaddish of the Rabbis"
  • Kaddish ahar Hakk'vura (קדיש אחר הקבורה) – Literally "Kaddish after a Burial", also called Kaddish d'Ithadata (קדיש דאתחדתא) named after one of the first distinguishing words in this variant.
  • Kaddish ahar Hashlamas Masechta (קדיש אחר השלמת מסכת) – Literally "Kaddish after the completion of a tractate," i.e. at a siyum (for Sefardim same as Kaddish d'Rabbanan")
All versions of the Kaddish begin with the Hatzi Kaddish (there are some extra passages in the Kaddish after a burial or a siyum). The longer versions contain additional paragraphs, and are often named after distinctive words in those paragraphs.
The Half Kaddish is used to punctuate divisions within the service: for example, before Barekhu, between the Shema and the Amidah and following readings from the Torah. The Kaddish d'Rabbanan is used after any part of the service that includes extracts from the Mishnah or the Talmud, as its original purpose was to close a study session. Kaddish Titkabbal originally marked the end of the service, though at later times extra passages and hymns were added to after it.
The Jewish Encyclopedia's article on Kaddish mentions an additional type of Kaddish, called "Kaddish Yahid", or "Individual's Kaddish".[1] This is included in the Siddur of Amram Gaon, but is a meditation taking the place of Kaddish rather than a Kaddish in the normal sense.

Shochen Ad - He Who Abides Forever


Shochen Ad

is a prayer based on the following verse of scripture;
Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the High and Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

The initials of the four synonyms for "righteous" in B'fi Yisharim happen to form the acrostic Yitzchac; by re-arranging the verbs 
Titromom, Titbrach, Titkadash, Tithalal, the third letters spell Rivcah. Such arrangement is found in the Sephardic Siddur. -Birnbaum 

The Art Scroll has more to say on this. On the Sabbath the chazzan begins with He Who abides forever, because the Sabbath was the climax of Creation, when G-d had all of Creation, including man, to acknowledge and praise Him.

And further to clarify the Birnbaum above about what four verbs spell out the acrostic Yitzchac; Yisharim, Tzadikim, Chasidim, Kidishim, i.e, upright, righteous, devout, and holy. These are also noted as the four types of people

Celebratory Psalms / Shacrit

P'Sukei D'Zimra - Psalm and Song

This section of the Saturday morning service begins with Baruch She-amar ( ברוך שאמר ) and introduces praise and song with the Tehilim  - Psalms. According to tradition, this prayer was put to the scroll some twenty four hundred years ago; the words of which are said to have fallen down from heaven. The sages of our people have further noted that the prayer is composed of 87 words, the numerical value of purest gold. One should stand when saying this prayer in honor of the Master of the Universe. Additionally, one holds the the two front tzitzis of the Tallis or Tallit Khatan and kisses them upon the prayer's conclusion; reasons for this vary depending on which Rabbi you ask. This prayer also celebrates the seven main characteristics of G-d:

1. He spoke and the world came into being.
2. He Who speaks and does.
3. He Who has mercy on the earth.
4. He Who gives a good reward to those who fear him
5. He Who is eternal.
6. He Who redeems His people from sin and rescues them from danger.
7. Blessed is His Name.

Scholars have trace the Baruch She-Amar prayer to the 9th century CE where it first appeared in the Siddur of Amram Gaon.


The answer to the Tzit Tzit riddle above is that Baruch She-amar contains 87 words equaling the numeric value for the word gidilim or fringes. The prayer also contains  the word Baruch 13 times corresponding to Hashem’s thirteen attributes of mercy.

I am sneaking this Psalm in here as it is normally done on Erev Shabbat, but methinks it is good for use in the morning service as well. The first line is canted in the link below labeled L'chu n'ran'nah.

It is part of six psalms symbolizing the six working days arranged in the 16th century. The first letter of each of the psalms combined contain the numerical value of 430 which equals that of the word nefesh (meaning soul). The first verse is canted here and many other worship songs have been derived from this Psalm praising the Creator of all and the protector of Israel. Birnbaum

The first five lines of this psalm are canted in the link below labeled Mizor Shir.  Rashi wrote that this psalm was the Levites' song for the Sabbath Temple service. It is used on Sabbaths each week and Holidays. It has been said that Psalm 92 actually refers the perfect Sabbath in the Olam Habah ( the World to come) , when man will reach the spiritual perfection that we only catch a dim reflection of in our Olam Hazeh (this world) Sabbath. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in the firmament of His power.

This, the final psalm in Tehillim, recognizes Hashem's greatness and our duty to praise Him. 
Psalms 149:6,  Let the high praises of God be in their throats, 
but a two-edged sword in their hands. 
i.e., singing the praises of G-d

Other Psalms that you may find listed in your Siddur for this section of the Shabbat Schacharit service, but not discussed here, include Psalms; 30, 34, 90, 91, 135, 33, 93, 145, 146, 147, 148, 149. Some Synagogues do not include Psalm 145, the Ashrei Hymn in the Shabbat morning service. It is recited twice in the morning and once in the evening, and it is reported by our sages that whoever recites this Psalm three times each day is assured a place in the world to come. 




Here we begin with Scriptures and Blessings that help us transition from the tehillim and the completion of the Pesuke Dezimrah and eventually on to the call to worship. Its is hoped that by the time we reach the Barchu and the Ark is opened that all the latecomers would have had a chance to arrive and therefore participate in the communal Avodah unto Hashem. 


In song of the sea we recount with all Israel our people, how the Almighty our G-d brought us out of Egypt and destroyed Pharaoh with his armies. In His anger, Hashem frightens Israel’s the surrounding Nations and scatters evil. This is contrasted by His mercy toward the then fledgling Israel. As we pray this Song of the Sea, it is as if we now also enter into that place of faith with our people, having left behind our own types of Egypt and slavery. Into the midst of the Red Sea, waters piled up on either side. The place of faith and awe. A place of silence but for the Hymns of thanksgiving and praise expressed unto the Almighty.

Next, Follows the Nishmat prayer. In this part of our spiritual journey,
We are caught up with all of creation in Honoring the Creator of all things, who bows low to care for and guide not only creation and all of the creatures therein, but for mankind very specifically and loveingly.

Although, some people, who have broken by the cruelties of life or blinded by the pride and accomplishments thereof, have discounted the idea of a Creator, or have suggested that He is cruel or uncaring, the Nishmat serves to inform us that it is He who gives us our very breath and awakening, while it is inferred that He in His mercy causes the rain to fall on the good and evil alike; providing for all. It is as if we have become like little children dumbfounded by the sudden knowledge of and exposure to the grandeur and expansive loving power of our G-d.

The Nishmath prayer proclaims the sovereignty of the Almighty our G-d.
That as creator every living thing shall bless His name. He cares for the downtrodden, gives life, heals the sick, rescued us from Egypt, the Eternal One, Who guides all creation in mercy causing provision and life to fall upon all. Part of this prayer is quoted in the prayer for rain. It is thought that the phrase " countless millions of favors" probably refers to drops of rain and tradition has it that thanks should be given for each drop. paraphrased from Birnbaum
